Chapter 20

West Berlin – July 1952

The rain that began to fall the next afternoon came out of the sky in fat, heavy drops. Bill Cochrane had not expected the change in weather, so he had no raincoat and no umbrella, just a summer-weight suit that was quickly drenched when the rain intensified and shoes that were as porous as one of Switzerland’s finest cheeses. He had listened to the weather forecast on Radio Berlin, and the outlook had been for clear and warm from dawn to dusk. Not for the first time, they couldn’t have been more wrong.

No matter, there was a bus stop a few blocks away, so he pulled his suit jacket close, held the German-language newspaper he was carrying over his head, and loped along at as quick a pace as he could muster, staying close to the dark, sooty bricks of one of the Free University’s old administrative buildings.

His focus on getting to the shelter of the bus stop was so paramount in his mind, that it took a few seconds for him to process the fact that a pair of headlights had gone on behind him from a motor car that had been waiting, and another second to guess that it was not a coincidence that the headlights – and the car – were now moving in the same direction as he. From the vehicular sounds behind him, he realized that there were two cars, not one, and it further occurred to him, with a speed now faster than lightning, that this was how Dr. Linse had been snatched off the street.

Another second or two and he catastrophized: Kreitler was a double agent and had held him late at the university at an unimportant adjunct faculty get-together just so he would be vulnerable. Shame on himself, Bill concluded. This was another Stasi team, and he was the next one to be snatched off the streets of West Berlin. He gripped the pistol in his pocket, held the

newspaper tightly to the top of his head and began to run.

The rain intensified. It fell in powerful sheets now. There was a clap of thunder, and a double flash of lightning. He picked up his pace. He looked for a doorway to duck into or an alley but found none among the new buildings constructed since the war. Everything was locked or fenced in.

The vehicle following him accelerated. It occurred to him to take a deep breath, whirl, and sprint back to the sanctuary of the university. He sped up, slowed, and sped up again, hoping to throw off his pursuers, while he desperately looked for an escape avenue.

There was none. The new construction since the war had resulted in larger buildings with locked doors to the outside and no passageways between. The first vehicle sped past him, slowed, snapped forward, and then jumped the curb, turning inward and blocking him. He heard the second vehicle come to a skidding stop behind him. He heard car doors explode open and he heard male voices, angry and insistent, and definitely directed at him.
